Vintage Baume & Mercier With Ties to Elvis Sells for $7K
Elvis Presley gifted this circa 1967 gold and diamond watch to Dodie Marshall, his co-star in “Easy Come, Easy Go.”
The timepiece, a gold and diamond-set manual wind bracelet watch, was a gift to Dodie Marshall, who played Presley’s love interest in the 1967 musical comedy “Easy Come, Easy Go.”
It went up for auction last month as part of Bonhams online-only watches auction and sold for $7,040 including buyer’s premium by the time the auction closed Thursday, around what was expected for the timepiece.
According to Bonhams, Presley gave Marshall, an American-born actress, the watch in 1967 after filming wrapped. “From Elvis Presley to Dodie Marshall My Great Treasure My Greatest Love, Elvis” is engraved on the back.
Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas that same year.
The Elvis Baume & Mercier was one of the highlights of Bonhams’ spring Fine Watches auction, held online April 20-30.
Of the 31 lots Bonhams put up for auction, 21 sold, or 68 percent.
The sale’s top lot was a rare, circa 2000s 18-karat white gold and diamond-set Audemars Piguet minute-repeating tourbillion wristwatch, which garnered $83,050.
The auction also included another timepiece connected to a celebrity known for his love of watches—Paul Newman.
A stainless steel manual wind Ref. 6262/6239 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Paul Newman” purchased in 1972 by an unnamed buyer (not Paul Newman) was estimated to sell for $150,000 to $250,000.
Rolex first began manufacturing a special dial for the Cosmograph Daytona that was either black with white sub-dials and seconds track, or cream with black sub-dials and seconds track, as seen in this model.
Originally known as the “exotic” dial, collectors renamed it the “Paul Newman” after the actor and race car enthusiast wore one in his 1969 movie “Winning” and on the cover of a popular Italian magazine.
While $150,000 to $250,000 seems like a steal considering Newman’s own Paul Newman Daytona sold for nearly $18 million , the watch did not find a buyer.
